round trek

Duration 14 days
Max Elevation: 5167 m
Start Point: Soti Khola

The circular trek Manaslu is considered as one of the truly great Himalayan trips. Surrounded by Annapurna in the west and Ganesh Himal in the east, Manaslu is one of the most elegant 8000-meter giants. Less than two percent of trekkers go there. This means that even in high season you will not meet many people.

The thing is that only in 2010 trekking around Manaslu officially became a teahouse trekking (that means that all overnight stays are in guesthouses). Until this moment, campsites had to be set up.

14 days that you will remember for a lifetime

Manaslu is a remote scenic majestic peak. The path to it leads you from a steep lowland with terraces of rice and millet through the powerful Budi Gandaki gorges with turquoise waters and amazing waterfalls. Suspension bridges here are in their own league, both in length and in height, and the annual monsoon often flushes out the smallest of them, leaving trekkers to use stones protruding from the water.

On this page you will find the information you need about the trekking schedule, about equipment that you need to take with you and you can download a list of equipment prepared for your convenience. You will also see what is included and not included in the price of trekking, what mountain sickness is and whether it is worth fearing, where we will spend nights and what to eat and drink on the trek, and many other usefulnesses. If you have questions, be free contact us at any moment!

Solitude, suspension bridges, ice amphitheater and more

The journey begins on the day you arrive to Kathmandu. We will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the booked hotel. This is day 0, a day of rest after the flight and moral preparation for the upcoming trekking. You can take a walk around evening Kathmandu, take a look at souvenir shops for further buying gifts for friends and have dinner at a local restaurant to appreciate Nepalese cuisine.

Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola (8-9 hours), altitude 700m

To avoid traffic jams, we will leave Kathmandu early. We will have a pleasant trip accompanied by mountain views in the background and hills surrounded by dense forests in the foreground. Then, after arriving in Dhading Beshi, we will drive towards Soti Khola with a more bumpy road. There will be many stops along the way to grab a bite to eat and stretch your legs.

Day 2: Soti Khola - Maccha Khola (6-7 hours), altitude 869m

After breakfast we will start our trip to Maccha Khola. Through dense forests and high ridges we will pass next to the icy and fast-flowing rivers of Bhuri Gandaki. Rice terraces paved the way for the village of Gurung, called Lapubesi, with several beautiful waterfalls. The trail will rise and descend several times before finally crossing the suspension bridge to reach the village of Machha Khola.

Day 3: Maccha Khola - Jagat (7 hours) altitude 1340m

From Maccha Khola we will make several small ascents and descents when we make our way along the narrow paths of this region. We will witness the bounty of nature on monkeys and langurs when we enter the wooded part of the road.

Going further, we will get to the "hot water" of Tatopani, where you can take a warm shower and relax. After, we will cross the new suspension bridge over the Buri Gandaki River to get to Doban. From there we head to the village of Gurung. Upon entering the village you will need to verify your trekking permissions at the checkpoint. From this day you will walk in the restricted area.

Manaslu trek map

Day 4: Jagat - Pewa (6 hours) altitude 1600m

We will reach Salleri and go down to Sirdibas, a village with prayer flags. Here you can taste local spirits at many stops along the route before we get to Phillim. There we will again have permission checked, and then we will continue along the western bank of the river.

This trail is beautiful with unique stone sculptures on the river bank formed by river water. Having come to the river bank, we will pass through the forests of rhododendron, Himalayan pines and overhanging rocks on towering peaks. This view is one of the main attractions of the route.

Finally, you will reach Pewa, the final destination of the 4th day. Pewa has the best Dal Bhat in Nepal, and Shilong Acha is simply amazing!

Day 5: Pewa - Namrung (6.5 hours), altitude 2630m

Today we will find out how winding the Budhi Gandaki River is because we cross it many times. Along the way, we will stop in the village of Prok to enjoy a beautiful view of Shringi Himal (7161m). The narrow gorge and the surrounding views give this place a very wild, pristine feeling. After a steep climb we get to the village of Namrung. It offers magnificent viewing platforms of the Shringi mountains (7161m), Himalchuli (7893m) and Ganesh Himal (7422m), which we will use.

Day 6: Namrung to Lho (4 hours), altitude 2957m

When we begin this day's trekking, you will see many locals dressed in traditional Tibetan costumes. Walking along the rocky slopes of the hill, we get to the village Lho. From this place you can admire stunning views of Manaslu (8163 m) and Northern Manaslu (7157 m). On this day we will gain quite a great height, so you should go slowly and listen to your body.

Day 7: Lho to Sama Gong (4 hours) altitude 3540m

Due to the high altitude, we will not go for a marathon distance on this day, but restrict ourselves to a short hike. During the walk you will be accompanied by a picturesque view of Manaslu. As soon as we enter the village of Sama Gong, the mountain views will disappear, however, their place will be replaced by yak pastures and typical Nepalese settlements.

Sama Gong is the main village of the Nubri people, in which there is a large Buddhist gompa, many shops, a health center, heliport and telephone/wifi access, etc.

Day 8: Acclimatization day - trip to either Pungyen Gompa, Manaslu Basecamp or Birendra Tal

To successfully resist mountain sickness, we will devote this day to acclimatization. We can go to Pungyen Gompa in the east of the Nubri Valley. Once on the top of the hill, you will get attractive views of Manaslu. Nearby you will see many grazing Himalayan Tarsus and Yak.
Or we can hike to Manaslu Base Camp, which is located north of Sama Gong. We will climb steady paths, however altitude may cause difficulty with breathing. Here, you need to maintain fluid balance in the body and walk slowly. So, we will go north to the Manaslu Glacier to the base camp at an altitude of 4400 m, and then return.
Or we can go hiking to Birendra Tal, which is a short walk from Sama Gong. This is an option if you feel the need for rest or have difficulty with altitude.

Day 9: Sama Gong in Sanbo (4 hours), altitude 3865m

Moving towards Sando, we will again meet the stormy river Budhi Gandaki. The trail is relatively easy, and we will move through the forest at a good pace, depending on how you feel. It is also the path to Manaslu Base Camp. The rocky sandy texture of this region with rare snow spots turns it into an alien terrain with thorny shrubs scattered along the way. To enter the village of Samdo, we will go through a large arch, almost like a portal to another world.

Day 10: Acclimatization Day - trip to the Tibetan border (8 hours), altitude 5100m

As a day of rest, we will stop in Samdo, from where we will go on a day trip to the Tibetan border. From the border you can also see parts of Tibet and Nepal. If you're lucky, you can also witness yak caravans crossing the border.

Day 11: Samdo - Dharamasala (4 hours), altitude 4460m

Today is a relatively short walk. We will meet Budhi Gandaki again several times and cross many small wooden bridges. We will be able to see the Sjacha glacier and appreciate its beauty, walking along the valley and going up to Dharamsala. Having reached Dharamsala, we can rest, relax and enjoy the majestic views.

Day 12: Dharamasala - Larkya La Pass – Bimthang (10 hours), altitude 3590m

After a short ascent from Dharamsala, we can see the Larkya glaciers and such peaks as Larkya (6249 m) and Cheo (6812 m). We will go along the glacier and gradually go down. We will cross the high pass of Larkya La, which is getting steeper as we climb to the top. Having reached the pass, we can see magnificent views of the peaks of Cheo Himal (6812 m), Kangaroo (6981 m) and Annapurna II (7937 m). Then we cross Dangboche-Kharkiv and finally arrive in Bimthang.

Day 13: Bimthang - Dharapany (9 hours), altitude 1700m

This is the last day you will walk along the trails of the Manaslu region. Going down the slope, you will pass through lush forests full of flora and fauna, including rhododendron bushes.

Walking back across the Dudh Khola, you will walk to Karche for lunch. Over the next hour, you will see many signs of a glacial flood, with broken tree trunks and rugged banks, the path becomes quite rough. The valley here is more agricultural and lush when you pass through the fields and groves of oak and rhododendron, remaining on the northern (right) bank. From there you continue your walk to Dharapani.

Day 14: Dharapany - Kathmandu (10 hours), altitude 1300m

After 7-8 hours drive you can relax in one of the most sophisticated hotels in Kathmandu.

Day 00 End of the journey

We will take you to Kathmandu International Airport for your flight home.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Water

Is tea included in meals? Or is it paid separately, like water?

I found that there are water bottles with a built-in filter, or it’s easier to throw chlorine dioxide tablets into water. And where to get this water on the route?

Answer

Tea is included in the breakfast.

You can buy water on the route - in tea houses and where the guide tells you.

Water needs to be cleaned. You can use filters, you can use tablets. 1 tablet per litre of water. For example, if you drink 3 litres of water per day, then you have to get 3 * 17 = 51tablets

Water purification tablets can also be bought in Kathmandu.

2. Hygiene

Inconvenient, but important question. You need to drink a lot of water, transitions between guesthouses are about 3-4 hours. What to do if I want to use the toilet? Use bushes?

 Answer

The route will come across big and small teahouses. You can use toilet there.

In any case, do not hesitate to ask a guide.

3. Kathmandu

Will I have time to walk around Kathmandu? Will the guide accompany me?

Answer

In Kathmandu there will be time on the day of arrival. Then you can take a walk, change money (there will be no exchangers on the route). By the way, changing money is more profitable in exchangers. Banks take merciless interest, commissions, ATMs even worse. Therefore, upon arrival, ask our managers where the best nearest exchanger is, they will tell you everything.

Your guide is a mountain guide. But if you want, we can arrange a guide for you for Kathmandu. It will cost $ 25-30 per day depending on the number of places you want to visit.
