Gokyo lakes

Duration 13 days
Max Elevation: 5300m
Start point Lukla
End point Lukla

The Gokyo Lake Trek is an alternative to the traditional Everest Base Camp trek , and at the same time it provides the trekker with many stunning views of Everest and overnight in the cult city of Namche Bazar. The route to Gokyo Lake gives the traveler an opportunity to get to know the local village life, spectacular views of the icy rivers and rocky fragments of glaciers, snow-capped mountains and, of course, the dazzling turquoise waters of the Gokyo lakes.

Mountains, glaciers and village life

Gokyo Lakes are actually six ponds located at an altitude of 4700 - 5000 m in the Gokio Valley, on the territory of the Sagarmatha National Park. The lakes are the highest freshwater system of lakes in the world and were designated as the Ramsar site (wetlands of international importance), and are also sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. After spending an extra day in the Gokyo Valley, trekkers can visit the 5th and 6th lakes, which lie in a high alpine bowl at the foot of Cho Oyu, the 6th highest mountain in the world.

Trekkers should be prepared for about 5 walking hours a day. One of the highlights is the steep climb up Gokyo RI (5,357 m) to see the mountains of Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse and Makalu and the largest glacier in Nepal, Ngozumpe and its ice ridges.

On this page you will find the information you need about the trekking schedule, about equipment that you need to take with you and you can download a list of equipment prepared for your convenience. You will also see what is included and not included in the price of trekking, what mountain sickness is and whether it is worth fearing, where we will spend nights and what to eat and drink on the trek, and many other usefulnesses. If you have questions, be free contact us at any moment!

The journey begins on the day you arrive to Kathmandu. We will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the booked hotel. This is Day 1, a day of rest after the flight and moral preparation for the upcoming trekking. You can take a walk around evening Kathmandu, take a look at souvenir shops for further buying gifts for friends and have dinner at a local restaurant to appreciate Nepalese cuisine.

On the second day we will take an unforgettable flight to Lukla! From here we will make an easy descent down the hill to Facding or Yorsale along the banks of the Dudh Kosi River. A light, well-trodden, lively path of porters and yaks, surrounded by forests on the sides of the valley.

Day 3 will lead us uphill to the capital of the Sherpas in the heart of the Khumbu region Namche Bazar. First, we will follow the valley to Monjo, where we will enter the National Park, then several times we will cross the river and begin the long, inexorable path up the mountain, with spectacular bridges across deep gorges. We leave the coniferous forest behind and get to the huge natural amphitheater with houses with a blue roof, scattered around the district. Namche is the main shopping center of Khumbu, Tibetans cross the high Nangpa La pass every week to get to the busy Saturday morning market. Currently, there are also many sports equipment stores, the Internet connection, a bank, a post office, cafes, bars, houses and rental points. We will rest here one day and will be able to visit the Everest Museum.

Day 4 we will dedicate to recovery and acclimatization to the height in Namche Bazar.

Day 5 we will walk to Dole (4210 m) along the easy path to Sangnash. Then we will climb uphill to Mong La, where we will have lunch. After lunch, descent to Porkha Tanga. A pleasant walk through the forest will lead us to Dole, where we will stay for the night.

On the sixth day we will head to Machermo, following a fairly light grassy path. While climbing along the Dudh Kozi River, you will have a view of Cho Oyu (8,200 m). We will pass through Lhabarma and Luz to reach the destination Machermo (4470 m).

We have a pretty steep climb on the Day 7 and, due to the increase in altitude and the general splendor of the area, we will spend two nights on the lakes to enjoy the views. In the morning of the Day 8 we have an early start, at about 3 in the morning to climb Gokyo Ri (5483 m) at sunrise. It will take about 2 and a half hours to get to the top, but you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablama, Pumori, Tabersku, Hankteka, Tensum Khan Gannel and Cho la Che, and then return to the village of Gokyo for the rest of the day.

We will go the further way in the reverse order and return to Lukla, from where we will have a short flight to Kathmandu.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Water

Is tea included in meals? Or is it paid separately, like water?

I found that there are water bottles with a built-in filter, or it’s easier to throw chlorine dioxide tablets into water. And where to get this water on the route?

Answer

Tea is included in the breakfast.

You can buy water on the route - in tea houses and where the guide tells you.

Water needs to be cleaned. You can use filters, you can use tablets. 1 tablet per litre of water. For example, if you drink 3 litres of water per day, then you have to get 3 * 17 = 51tablets

Water purification tablets can also be bought in Kathmandu.

2. Hygiene

Inconvenient, but important question. You need to drink a lot of water, transitions between guesthouses are about 3-4 hours. What to do if I want to use the toilet? Use bushes?

 Answer

The route will come across big and small teahouses. You can use toilet there.

In any case, do not hesitate to ask a guide.

3. Kathmandu

Will I have time to walk around Kathmandu? Will the guide accompany me?

Answer

In Kathmandu there will be time on the day of arrival. Then you can take a walk, change money (there will be no exchangers on the route). By the way, changing money is more profitable in exchangers. Banks take merciless interest, commissions, ATMs even worse. Therefore, upon arrival, ask our managers where the best nearest exchanger is, they will tell you everything.

Your guide is a mountain guide. But if you want, we can arrange a guide for you for Kathmandu. It will cost $ 25-30 per day depending on the number of places you want to visit.
